Mechanism of Action 

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic with the following pharmacological effects:

• Bactericidal action: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis.

• Spectrum of activity: Effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including:

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes

  • Haemophilus influenzae

  • Escherichia coli

  • Proteus mirabilis

Dosage & Administration 

• Adults and children (≥40 kg):

  • Mild-moderate infections: 250-500 mg every 8 hours.

  • Severe infections: 500-875 mg every 8-12 hours.

• Children (<40 kg):

  • Dosage by weight: 20-90 mg/kg/day divided every 8-12 hours.

• Special populations:

  • Renal impairment: Adjust dose based on creatinine clearance.

• Administration:

  • Take orally with or without food (food may reduce GI upset).

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve.

Storage Conditions 

• Store in original packaging at 20-25°C (68-77°F).

• Protect from moisture and light.

• Keep tightly closed after opening.

• Do not use after expiration date.
